European Commission funds project for quality development in long-term care in 12 European countries – German experience with the Charter for People in Need of Long-Term Care and Assistance is exemplary
The Information Centre on Long-term Care Charter at the German Centre of Gerontology has been participating in a European project „Wellbeing and Dignity of Older People" (WeDO) since December 2010 (project duration 18 months). The project is coordinated by AGE Platform Europe and gathers 18 partners coming from 12 different member states.
WeDO aims at enabling all interested stakeholders to discuss, exchange experiences and good practice for quality development in long-term care both at national and EU level. Base of WeDO is the „European Charter of the Rights and Responsibilities of Older People in Need of Long-term Care and Assistance“ (AGE Europe 2010), the German Charter of Rights for People in Need of Long-Term Care and Assistance. The German experience with the German Charter of Rights for People in Need of Long-Term Care and Assistance is exemplary for the implementation of quality principles in internal and external quality development and quality labelling.
On national level, together with the federal association of senior interest groups (BAGSO), the Information Centre on Long-term Care Charter coordinates the “German Coalition” with 18 representatives from statutory and private health insurance funds, senior citizen interest groups, and associations of the care professions, universities, the consumer advice centres, gerontopsychiatric care and the government (Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth; Federal Ministry of Health). The “German Coalition” will develop recommendations for the implementation of quality principles in long-term care both on national and European level. The outcome of WeDO, a “Guide” for the implementation of quality principles in long-term care in Europe and national strategies for quality development in the long-term care sector will be presented in a final conference in Brussels in November 2012.
